PORT McNEILL, VANCOUVER ISLAND, BC
Sometime next year, if all goes according to the expansion plan, cruising yachts should have a better chance of finding room alongside Port McNeill’s docks. Through a $7.8-million redevelopment project, that Vancouver Island community hopes to double the amount of wharf space available to the general public.
The expansion plan is welcome news to transient boaters, many of whom don’t stop due to lack of available moorage, and to Port McNeill businesses eager to profit from the mariners passing in front of their small community.
This project is possible, thanks to the financial contributions from several organizations. The Island Coastal Economic Trust, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Coast Sustainability Trust and the Municipality of Port McNeill provided cash. Western Forest Products deeply discounted the price of the seaside land needed for the scheme.
The expanded harbour will comprise old and new facilities – a new floating jetty, more moorage space, enlarged breakwater and a waterfront park. Work is expected to begin this fall or spring 2009.
