The Fleet Maintenance Facility, FMF Cape Breton, will be hosting a Youth Exploring Skills to Industry Training (YES 2 IT) event on Thursday, May 29 from 3 p.m. to 7 pm. FMF Cape Breton is located within Her Majesty’s Canadian Dockyard at Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt. The YES 2 IT event is a joint initiative of the Industry Training Authority and the Ministry of Education, designed to increase awareness of trades among younger students, parents, educators, and the broader community.
The event is an opportunity for youth to get hands-on experience applying skills utilized in a variety of trade occupations while making connections with tradespersons in their communities. Some of the trades activities being demonstrated at the event include: woodworking, metal work (welding, pipefitting and sheet metal), electrical, electronics and crane operation. Youth participants will learn about the rewards and benefits of hands-on training, the labour demands for skilled tradespersons in the workforce, and the lifestyle, income, and career opportunities available to those individuals who choose a career as a certified tradesperson.
This YES 2 IT event is designed to explore the role parents play in influencing a child’s career choice, and to help children learn about career options and opportunities in trades. Parents and teachers are highly encouraged to come and learn about the trades with the children in order to increase education about career opportunities in the trades and apprenticeship programs. There will be a resource centre set up for adults, with a multimedia presentation and a take-home information package. The day’s events will conclude with a skills competition and a barbeque, hosted by apprentices from FMF Cape Breton.
